Longcase
clock by John Smorthwait
This
longcase clock was made by John Smorthwait around 1710. During
the 18th century there was a big demand throughout Europe
for all things Chinese or Japanese including lacquer furniture.
Methods were developed to imitate this lacquer work using
oriental scenes. The red japanned lacquered case on this clock
is of exceptional quality.
