About the Exhibition Life Beyond the Label

Before you make up your mind..open it

This exhibition is presented as part of a larger experimental project called Rethinking Disability Representation in Museums (RDR). The project was initiated by the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries in the University of Leicester's Department of Museum Studies (RCMG).

The project aims to create a lasting change in the way museums and galleries approach the representation and interpretation of disability.

Nine museums are taking part offering a variety of exhibitions, displays and educational programmes seeking to investigate ways in which visitors disabled and non-disabled - respond to the experiences they encounter.

The focus is on uncovering material evidence held in museum collections that may contribute to a broader public understanding of disability, exploring historical stories with creative interpretation to engage audiences into rethinking attitudes to disability.
