| The Colchester Cloth Trade - 500 Years+ of Industry. Patrick Denney - The Colchester cloth trade was a major factor of life in the town throughout much of the Middle Ages and beyond. Thousands of people were employed in the various stages of the manufacturing process, and with the influx of the Flemish cloth workers from the late sixteenth century onwards, the trade rose to even greater heights. However, the industry was vulnerable to the vagaries of war and the uncertainty of foreign markets and by the early 1800s the trade had been brought close to collapse. In fact, the end came just a few decades later when the last surviving bay maker in the town finally shut up shop and called it a day. |

| Goodbye Rome!
The ending of Roman Colchester and Roman Britain sixteen hundred years ago.
Philip Crummy - In AD 410, Honorius, emperor of the Western Roman empire, famously wrote a letter apparently addressed to the cities of Britain instructing them to look to their own defences. However, the Roman army didn't simply switch the lights off and march back to Rome leaving Britain in the Dark Ages. The ending of Roman Britain was a complicated affair which is difficult to reconstruct sixteen hundreds years on. During this talk, we will look at the evidence for this crucial period in Britain's history and in particular see how Colchester fared in what were very difficult and uncertain times. Was it all death and destruction? Invasion and new masters? The end of civilisation? A new dawn? Do we even know? You'll have to come to find out. |

| The Joys of Castle Park.
Yasmine Somers - Many people say how lovely the park is, & how well it is put together, but this is all down to hard work by the gardeners, Museums & Rangers, little of what people know about their day to day lives. So, this talk will generally bring together all the aspects of the park, including history, planting & events to name but three things that happen to make the park what it is today. |

| Ghost beliefs in Ancient Rome and Greece.
Amy Cotterill - Haunted houses, rattling chains, the dead seeking revenge on the living… these are all recognisable plot elements from the pens of Charles Dickens, Henry James and Edgar Allen Poe. However these themes have been cropping up in ghost stories since the dawn of literature. This talk examines representations of ghosts from Ancient Greece and Rome, including a woman who was doomed to spend eternity hopping on one leg, and looks at how beliefs about ghosts have changed down the centuries. |

| Out of the Box presents: From the Cradle of Civilisation to the High Street - Mesopotamian Treasures @ Ipswich Museum |
| Get up close to some of the objects from the world’s first great civilisations. We will look at cylinder seals, stamp seals and talismans used by people living almost 5000 years ago in the empires of Babylon and Assyria. This might lead us to consider the modern trade in cultural objects from modern Iraq and what it means for world heritage today. |
