| Don’t miss an enchanting programme of storytelling sessions at Christchurch Mansion throughout March, April and May. The sessions which last 45 minutes – 1 hour are ideal for children aged 2 – 6 and can be enjoyed absolutely free. Sessions start at 1.30pm and can be enjoyed in comfortable surroundings, with mats and cushions to sit on. Children must be accompanied by an adult. |

| These sessions are for parents, carers and their children 2½ to 4 years old. This is a weekly activity hour for adults and children to have fun exploring our natural history museum through play, art and craft activities, stories and rhymes. Thursday mornings,10am to 11am. Booking only on 01206 282941 as places are limited. Only single bookings can be taken- sorry no groups. We are afraid that we cannot accommodate babies and all children must be accompanied. | 2008 is the Year of the Rat and a group of these furry friends are paying a visit to the museums in Colchester. They have decided to play a little game of hide and seek with us and we need your help in tracking them down!
|
| Throughout May you can visit Colchester Castle Museum, Hollytrees Museum, the Natural History Museum and Tymperleys Clock Museum to see if you can spot any of them. Just pick up a sheet from any of the museums, then make your way around them, noting down the rat positions as you go. |
| Complete the challenge and hand your answer sheets in at any of the museums. All entries will be put into a prize draw to win one of several prizes including ‘Ratatouille’ on DVD, tickets to the Colchester Castle, and toy rats.
|
| You can visit all of the museums in one day, or come back several times throughout May to complete your sheet. It’s up to you!

| This May a brand new exhibition opens at Gallery 3, in Ipswich’s Town Hall Galleries. Exploring life in traditional China, the exhibition will feature beautiful objects from the museum service’s collection, many of which have not been seen in public before. |
| See, learn about and explore items and stories that will leave you inspired as you discover life in traditional southern China as it was on the brink of change between 1840 – 1860. |
| Featuring a fine selection of costumes and ornaments you can see beautiful examples of life from this fascinating point in history. See a wedding robe, a dressing table, mirrors, shoes and more. You can also discover more about Taoism and the beliefs of the time through immortals, gods and the work of a priest in popular religion.

| Take a closer look at daily life with examples of tea pots, cups, tea chests and coolie hats, as well as umbrellas, eating vessels and baskets. Plus, discover martial arts with a wall hanging of Kuan Ti, the God of War, paintings of people exercising with different weapons and examples of actual weapons!

| Come along and don’t miss this fantastic and free exhibition in the wonderful surroundings of Gallery 3, in Ipswich’s Town Hall Galleries.

| Chinese Kite Making @ Colchester Castle |
| Come along to Colchester Castle and go sky high with ideas when you can make your very own kite! Using all sorts of fabulous shapes and colours you can make a kite of your own design, with the help of our friendly artist. When you have finished making your kite why not go outside and see if you can fly it in the beautiful surroundings of the Caste Park. |
| The Chinese invented kites to fly over castles. By measuring how much string they had to use, and the angle of flight, they knew how far they needed to tunnel to get under and into the castle to attack. |

Using silk and crepe paper your fan will be a work of art as you hand paint your very own design onto it. Using images of nature as inspiration for the design of your fan you may want to paint butterflies, birds or insects – the choice is yours! |

| Mistress Spencer has sadly fallen on hard times and has decided to make a living selling tea – after all it what’s everybody wants! Come along and see what she has to offer as well as discover more about her tea-related products. Mistress Spencer will tell you about all the different Chinese teas that she has, and how great Chinese tea really is. |

| Don’t miss Colchester Castle’s most stunning exhibition to date featuring 43 miniature terracotta figures from the Chinese Han Dynasty. This is only the second time these figures have ever been out of China and their first visit to the UK. |
| The miniature figures, from Xuzhou Museum in Jiangsu Province China, are 2,000 years old and represent soldiers, officials, dancers, musicians and cavalry horses. Working in partnership with Essex County Council, Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service is delighted to be hosting this blockbuster exhibition as part of the Jiangsu Festival. |

| The traditional Chinese Lion Dance dates back thousands of years. The lion brings protection, good luck, prosperity, health, longevity and blessing and in this creative session you can make your own miniature lion puppet. Your puppet will fit over your hand and lower arm and can be decorated with lavish colours, just like the Chinese lions. | A Victorian Weekend @ Hollytrees Museum, Colchester |
| Come along and take a journey into the past with a whole weekend of events that can be enjoyed absolutely free. See a Victorian lacemaker demonstrating lace making with authentic Victorian bobbins, as well as purse making, examples of bead embroidery and a spinning wheel. Learn more about a typical school day for a Victorian child with our Victorian school mistress when you can see a range of Victorian toys and games, plus learn more about life at the time.
You can also meet a lady Egyptologist and see her treasures. She has a range of Ancient Egyptian artefacts newly dug up in Egypt and will also talk about how the Egyptians made a mummy. With more to enjoy, don’t miss this great weekend of Victorian fun.

| Tea Clipper Week @ Hollytrees Museum |
| Tea, wonderful tea! What better way to celebrate one of our nation’s favourite drinks than in the beautiful surroundings of Hollytrees Museum? In this special week of activities you can enjoy lots of tea related activities and discover more about how tea came to Britain. During the afternoons you can meet Captain Gilbert and hear his tales of life on the high seas doing the tea run. You can also have the chance to see and touch objects related to tea that are not usually on display in the museum such as a tea caddy and sugar nippers.

| Why not make your own souvenir tea towel to commemorate the tea clipper and tea trade? Create your own print using fabric paints, which you will then transfer to a supplied blank tea towel. Take it home, iron it, and you have your own uniquely designed and ready-to-use tea towel!
