This
is an unusual example of a nineteenth century boys sampler
made by William Castell in 1908. Samplers have long been used
as both a pastime and as a method of educating girls, and
occasionally boys, in the domestic needlecraft skills. Children
as young as nine were expected to produce a piece such as
this.
