Tombstones
of Facilis and Longinus
These are the tombstones
of two Roman Soldiers. The first is of Marcus Favonius Facilis, a
centurion of the 20th Legion, while the second is of Longinus
Sdapeze, a cavalryman, who originally came from the area of
modern day Bulgaria. Both Facilis and Longinus probably came
over to Britain with the invading Roman army in AD 43 and
died while based at Colchester.
