The
Theatre
The
town had a stone-built theatre next to the Temple of Claudius,
which was used for drama. There had been a theatre on the site since
at least AD 60. It was a semicircular building with a stage at the
north end and tiers of seating to the south, and it was big enough
to have seated about 3000 people.
Part
of the curved wall of the theatre can still be seen in a building
in Maidenburgh Street, and the position of the vanished wall in
the street is marked by dark bricks in the road.
