The
Temple of Claudius
When
the Emperor Claudius died in AD 54, the Senate at Rome declared him
a god, and an impressive temple was built at Colchester for his worship. At
the top of a grand flight of steps, the temple was fronted by a row
of eight columns. It stood in a rectangular precinct that dominated
the town. Worship continued there until the 4th century
AD.
Construction of the Norman castle on the same site preserved
the stone platform on which the temple was built. Vaults inside
the temple platform can be explored to this day.
